This exhibition is the third in a series of exhibitions over the next two years that will demonstrate the role of the Principles of Design within artworks in the Museum's Permanent Collection. Upcoming exhibitions will focus on Rhythm, Contrast and Movement. This exhibit will focus on proportion, which is the relationship of the size, location, or amount of an element to another part of the work or to the work as a whole.

Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition

The Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition, a joint project of Polk Museum of Art and the Cities of Lakeland and Winter Haven, is quickly becoming one of the most prestigious outdoor sculpture competitions in the country. Twenty sculptures are selected by a committee of local community members for the exhibition: ten are installed in downtown Lakeland and ten in downtown Winter Haven. Each city has its own Best of Show, 2nd Place, Honorable Mention and People’s Choice Awards. It’s all about great sculpture – right in the heart of Polk County! "Shelter" exhibition at the Polk Musuem of Art

The idea of shelter can be anything from a physical enclosure to emotional security. Shelter brings together diverse works from the Museum’s permanent collection and looks at the range of artistic representations of this idea. The exhibition will include works by artists including Virginia Beth Shields, Hollis Sigler, Suzanne Camp Crosby, and many others.

Silver Linings: Delicate Drawings by Carol Prusa and All Natural: Organic Forms by Akiko Sugiyama and Jean Yao

Two new exhibitions are open at the Polk Museum of Art featuring art by Carol Prusa, Akiko Sugiyama and Jean Yao. Each artist uses different media and forms to represent the natural world in their work. Carol Prusa creates large-scale drawings on 3-D hemispheres that are lit from within by fiber optic lights. Akiko Sugiyama incorporates the natural by making wall sculptures from rice paper. Jean Yao weaves intricate baskets using palm flowers and other natural materials.

Chihuly Glass at Polk Museum of Art

Polk Museum of Art has acquired two new artworks by internationally noted master glassmaker Dale Chihuly. The pieces were purchased for the Permanent Collection by the Museum's Art Resource Trust group and by individual donors. Along with the Chihulys, the Museum also purchased a piece by Seattle glass artist Ginny Ruffner, one of the most important female glass artists in the country. All three pieces are currently on display in the Museum's Hollis Gallery. The pieces by Chihuly are "Sunset Red Macchia with Sky Blue Lip Wrap ", "Olive and Blue Green Persian Set" and "The House of Glorious Mornings" by Ginny Ruffner.

Independence Day Carillon Concert
Saturday, Jul 4, 2009

Celebrate the birth of our country in the Sanctuary, while listening to beloved tunes such as “America, the Beautiful,” “Yankee Doodle, ” “I Dream of Jeannie” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” To honor our nation's military, free admission will be offered to all branches of the military, active, retired and disabled veterans. A valid driver's license along with a DD214 or other active military identification needs to be presented at the entrance gate to receive the free admission and 50 percent off the admission for up to three accompanying guests.

Thunder on the Ridge Spectacular

Each year our exciting July 4th celebration features national recording artists and other local entertainment. This years line up will include a concert by The Commodores at 7pm. Fort Meade Fourth of July Celebration

Fort Meade's Recreation Department will have fun games and contests at the Fort Meade Outdoor Recreation Area for the Fort Meade Fourth of July Celebration. There will be an inflatable bounce house and an inflatable slide available for the kids, which will be a fund-raiser for local youth groups. Other special patriotic contests, as well as entertainment, will be offered by the Fort Meade Chamber of Commerce.

Cypress Gardens July 4th Celebration
Saturday, Jul 4, 2009

Both Cypress Gardens and Splash Island Water Park are set to celebrate July 4th with a very special day of entertainment. Cypress Gardens will be open from 9:00am-10:00pm and will feature four ski shows at 1:30 pm, 4:00 pm, and 6:00 pm, with a special “Nighttime Ski Show” at 8:45 pm. The Lakeside Stage (between Ski Stadiums) will also host The Fletcher Cane Band from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm. Then, be sure to stay for the Fireworks on the Lake at the Ski Stadium at 9:15 pm (immediately following the “Nighttime Ski Show). At Splash Island, the park hours will be from 10:00am-10:00pm with a live DJ playing your favorite music from noon-7pm.

Summer Youth Dance Camp

Florida Dance Theatre is offering its Summer Youth Dance Camp for students ages 6 through 10 funded in part by the George W Jenkins Fund from within the Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland. Each week students experience a variety of dance styles including ballet, jazz, hip hop, and musical theatre along with acting/pantomime and art classes. Students are provided drinks and snacks but must provide their own bag lunches. They are also given a Sumnmer Camp t-shirt Friday is Pizza Day and the day students participate in a short performance demonstrating all they have learned to their families and friends. Full and partial scholarships are available for students that qualify for the Polk County School Lunch Program.
