Florida’s Native Black Bears: Safely Enjoying Living in Their Territory

7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Thursday, November 10

Presented by Jennifer M. Korn, Ph.D., Biological Scientists III, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Presentation by Sierra Club

With conflicts and the hunt, bears were much in the news this last year. To live safely in their territory - on which urban sprawl is encroaching - we need to understand FWC's management plan and a few simple guidelines.

FWC has created seven Bear Management Units across the state for the estimated population of 4000+ bears. The plan takes into consideration habitat and corridors for these large creatures who primarily eat a plant based diet.  An adult male weighs about 300 pounds and a female about 150 - that's a lot of fruit and nuts!

Guidelines for us - the encroachers:  Keep Bears Wild: secure food sources like garbage, pet food and bird seed.

Program starts at 7:00 - covered dish dinner at 6:30 (if you wish to participate, please bring a dish to share, and bring your own drink and utensils).  Bring a flashlight for the parking lot.
