Explorations V Children’s Museum in downtown Lakeland has a new exhibit - First Responders! The museum, just for kids 10 and under, features three floors of mind stretching, kid-powered exhibits and programs provide a hands-on, fun-filled adventure in learning for children and their families. Hours are Monday – Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The First Responders exhibit opened February 1 and children in attendance got a chance to meet real first responders and take home their own fire fighter or sheriff hat.
First Responders features the newly renovated Fire Truck and Sheriff Car in front of a city skyline. Guests can activate a simulated fire that sets off a flashing light and put it out by holding an authentic fire hose to the simulated flame just as a firefighter would point their hose. The gallery also features costuming and other open-ended play in the theme.
The purpose of the First Responders gallery is to give children an environment to figure out how a community functions. Once children are in kindergarten, they realize the world is bigger than their home and they are eager to explore it. When children have the opportunity to explore community helpers through play they are challenged by their peers to create a positive solution in order to help a friend. This advances a child’s social skills, teaches collaboration, and role-plays problem solving.
These are necessary skills for early learners and can impact a child’s ability to excel in upper elementary.
