Bartow Chalk Walk Festival, presented by Frost Law Firm, will be on October 5-6. This is Polk County’s only professional chalk art festival.
Centrally located in Bartow at the crossroads of Broadway Avenue (Hwy. 98) and Main Street at Ft. Blount Park, the 2nd Annual Chalk Walk Festival provides a look at a fascinating art form from 16th Century Italy that was created by those who paid tribute to the “Madonna” icon – drawn profusely upon the sidewalks to honor her. A new generation of street painters have sprung up, and they travel from city to city, and festival to festival, creating chalk artwork that hardly lasts longer than the handful of days required to create them.
Fort Blount Park is the perfect medium for their expressions. Over the two days, artists will be blocking, filling in, blending, contouring and shading until their work is complete. Festival goers will vote on their favorites via the People’s Choice Award.
Awards are Sunday at 3:00 p.m. as the artists will have finished their work starting with the Sponsor’s Choice, awarded by presenting sponsor, John & Terry Frost from the Frost Law Firm; followed by the Sheriff’s Award, presented by Sheriff Grady Judd; and finally, the People’s Choice Award.
Bartow is extending its famous hometown hospitality to 25+ artists from near and far, including returning international artist, Abraham Buricago from Torren, Mexico, who last year won Most Popular Artist, and chosen by Sheriff Grady Judd for the Sheriff’s Award, for his outstanding chalk art drawing.
Chalking for Kids will include a hands-on chalk crafts tent by Main Street Bartow merchant, Indigo Moon. For a nominal fee, kids can buy a cup of chalk to create their very own masterpieces at Fort Blount Park.
Entertainment line-up includes the Kitchen Killaz, Mike Monts De Oca, Matt Campbell with more to be announced. Custom collectible event cups, which sold out before noon last year, will be back for beer, wine, or soda on site, with an array of food trucks and vendors to complement the creative environment.
