Sing me a Story, Read me a Song

Faculty Artist Series: Christina Dominski-Sale, mezzo soprano; Mark Thomsen, tenor James Caraher, piano

Whether it’s a romantic duet, a vengeful aria or a funny song, composers often draw their inspiration from novels, short stories, poems – or historical figures and events.  Composers such as Richard Strauss, Jules Massenet, and Irving Berlin have created a musical retelling of stories by authors such as Shakespeare, Goethe, or Victor Hugo; or of historical figures, such as Annie Oakley. At one time in the not-too-distant-past, a former U.S. President used a song of the time as a kind of “theme song” for a Presidential election. Discover in this concert the rich emotional and historical tapestry of song.
