Cherry Pocket Steak & Seafood Shak
This historic Lake Wales seafood institution has been serving locals and drawing visitors to its waterfront property since the 1940s, and it gets better and better every year.
If These Walls Could Talk
Cherry Pocket Steak & Seafood Shak isn’t just a seafood restaurant and bar, it’s an experience. Despite renovations, the establishment still bares an Old Florida charm that only gets better with time. Cherry Pocket started out in the forties as a single room store with a little bit of this and that: mainly groceries and bait. Legend has it that locals would ride their horses right through the front door, throw back a cold beverage and ride right on out the back door. Rowdy horseman and fisherman have left behind stories of gambling, fighting and big fish that will keep you entertained for hours… if you’re game to listen to a local tell them.
Today, Cherry Pocket is a full-service restaurant and bar serving lunch and dinner seven days per week. Fists don’t fly, but patrons of all ages do flock to their waterfront property for the some of the best meals and desserts around town.
One thing is for sure, the restaurant sure does live up to its name, which is synonymous with a fisherman’s favorite fishing spot.
Seafood, Steaks, Wings, and Other Things
Obviously, Cherry Pocket is known for their seafood and steaks, but we can drill down what dishes the locals keep returning for. First, let’s talk about the grouper. Fresh caught grouper anything and everything is always a favorite. Then there are the wings – they’ve even been voted best in the county. Do you think it’s strange that one of the best things on a seafood restaurant’s menu isn’t actually seafood? Don’t. Here’s the deal: if you can cook, you can cook. Your name may have seafood in it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t cook a mean steak, pasta dish, peanut butter pie, or chicken wings.
Cherry Pocket’s menu is also pretty cool. The cover reads “The Cherry Pocket Times” and tells the seafood shack’s whole story – don’t overlook it.
Indoor and Outdoor Seating
At Cherry Pocket Steak & Seafood Shak you have two options for dining: indoors or out. The outdoor deck is our favorite and features a bar that resembles a house boat. It’s pretty awesome. There’s a second bar inside.
Save Room for Dessert
Cherry Pocket’s desserts taste just like mamma cooked them. That’s because each and every one is baked by owner, Elsie Eten. They’ve got carrot cake, peanut butter pie (our favorite), key lime pie, cheesecake, chocolate cake and brownies.
RV Lots and Lake Cabins
Cherry Pocket is more than just a seafood and steak shack, they also have RV lots and nine lake cabins that can be rented if you are looking to spend some quality time on lovely Lake Ned. The lake cabins provide a unique experience and are a perfect example of an authentic fish camp accommodation.
